My Last Breath by Ephraim Churchill

This is my last breath
Or is it
It could be
So why waste it
Why not take it
Fully accepting that it is indifferent
Indifferent to my wants and needs
Not caring about my passions or dreams
My last breath is unconcerned with my unplanted seeds
It is unaware of my life’s deeds
It screams only of wanting me
Wanting me to end
Which frightens me
And calls me to scream
And to believe

So here it is

With my last breath, I will BE
BE loud and joyful at the sound of the world
BE overcome at the sight of the people
I will walk outside and breathe the fresh air that has gifted me all the way through this final day
I will find a grass field above a beautiful sky of blue, and in it I will lay
I will bend to my knees with my eyes closed and my hands outstretched, and I will pray
Pray, thanks to someone or something that has gifted me this final breath and this perfect day
I will climb the tallest mountain and feel the wind on my face
And through all the pains and the aches, I will still give thanks
Knowing full well it was a gift from above to run this lifelong race
And in all I do with my one last breath, I will remember to sit in the beauty and just BE

With my last breath, I will DO
DO that which scares me and begs me to stop
I will call my parents and thank them for the things they taught me unbelievably
I will hold the hand of the one my heart belongs to and cry my love to her uncontrollably
I will not fall to the temptations of this growing lonely
I will DO all that which I was too scared to DO because that is the way of life
Is life not so short that before we know it, we can no longer DO
So, in all I do with my one last breath, I will remember to not just wait… I will DO

With my last breath, I will LOVE
LOVE so deeply and so freely that all worldly woes fade away
LOVE like there is no tomorrow
LOVE like there is no sorrow
I will LOVE with every bone in my body
Every aspect of me
I will LOVE others as though that is all I know
Because what a beauty could be seen in this world if only we remembered LOVE
Oh, how Hate’s plans have corrupted our LOVE
Oh, how Pains plans have corrupted our LOVE
Oh, how Fates' plans have corrupted our LOVE
I cry LOVE
LOVE until the possibility leaves
Make Hate and Pain and Fate all Grieve
Grieve for the ones who don’t fall victim to thieves
Thieves of love, though strong they may be
Not strong enough to stop this thing
This thing called LOVE above all powers that be
And in all I do with my one last breath, I will remember to cry out my LOVE for all to hear

There is so much I would BE if this were my last breath
So much I would DO were I faced with death
So many I would LOVE where this day my last
But I do not believe it is
Or is it
It could be
So why waste it
Why not take it
Fully accepting that it is indifferent
Indifferent to my wants and needs
Not caring about my passions or dreams
My last breath is unconcerned with my unplanted seeds
It is unaware of my life’s deeds
It screams only of wanting me
Wanting me to end
Which frightens me
And calls me to scream
And to believe

So, though my last breath, this may not be
I will live as though it is, unconditionally
I will live my life so bravely and freely
That all my life will be lived as though it is running out on me
And with these things that are remembered to me
My breath will BE, DO, and LOVE forever and free
